Present Profile: Buying for Grandparentsgifts 299x170 Grill Buying for Grandparents

The next group in our Present Profile posting series is the grandparents. Buying gifts for grandparents and other older relatives can be a bit tricky, but small appliances can be a pretty safe bet at being a big hit.

In the realm of appliance gifts for grandparents, an electric grill may not be the most common option, but it can be great addition to their kitchen. Since cooking time is reduced with contact grilling (as it cooks from both sides), they can get hot meals fast with a very low amount of hassle. You just have to make sure not to purchase over the needs of the person you’re buying for.

Size: When you’re buying an electric grill for grandparents, size is a consideration, but not the same way it is for moms and dads. For moms, you want a size that fits the family she’s feeding; for dads, bigger is usually better. For grandparents, though, anything too big and flashy may be intimidating. In addition, if they’re usually only feeding a few mouths, the bigger size may go to waste. You may want to get a small or medium grill that has less cooking space, but will fit better on their counter. Remember the approximate 20 Sq. In. per serving rule and you may realize that a 30 or 50 Sq. In. grill will provide more than enough space.

Programming: Unless your grandparent happens to be a huge fan of learning technology, then your best bet will be to go with the least programming possible. A wide-range of George Foreman grills just require you to plug the grill in and it’s ready to go after a short preheat. This way, you’re not forcing new technology onto them that they have to either learn or keep referring to the usage instructions.

For the grandparent that wants an easy-to-program grill that serves 2 or 3 servings, we recommended any of the grills in our Champ™ grill or Super Champ™ grill series. If you think your grandparent would want a little bit of programming – just basic temperature control – then you can get the Super Champ™ Vari-Temp Grill that features and easy-to-use dial temperature control with space for 2-3 servings.

Whichever way you decide to go, just make sure not to over purchase for the person receiving the gift, since it may be the difference between a gift that’s a total hit and used throughout the years, or something that’s stashed in a cabinet because it’s too big or complicated.
