Fall is officially here and it’s the perfect time to start incorporating some great seasonal and local flavors into your weekly menu plan. With the close of the main growing season, cities and towns across the country are hosting local farmer’s markets, which are the perfect place to get some really good fresh ideas for your menu.

By shopping at your local farmer’s market, you’re getting a couple of benefits:

  1. You’ll find local and seasonal food items that you can’t get at a national chain or, many times, even your local grocery store
  2. You’ll be able to easily find a greater variety of produce to incorporate into a dish or meal
  3. You usually find better quality / flavor in the items you buy
  4. You can get inspired to create new dishes with what you find
  5. You’re supporting local farms and co-ops, which can really use the support right now—saving the world as you satisfy your taste buds!

Of course, farmer’s market shopping isn’t like going to your regular grocery store. Instead of going with a list of what you have to get in mind, it’s usually easier (and a lot more fun) to simply go and let what you find inspire you. Whether it’s local/seasonal varieties of fruits and vegetables or even unique, local meats and/or fish, there are so many things to inspire your inner chef.

Understandably, this kind of shop-then-cook method can be a little intimidating if you’ve never done it before. Most of us feel most comfortable when we cook with a recipe and we get nervous just setting out without any direction or roadmap to follow.
