GRILLED SMASHED ITALIAN SAUSAGE SLIDERS

Bring your appetite. How big can a patty be before it’s no longer a slider? We’re pushing the slider/burger boundary with these hearty pork patties, seasoned with the fitting flavors of Italian cuisine for a sensational appetizer or gameday meal.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 lbs. ground pork
  • 2 tsp. fennel seeds
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. fresh ground black pepper
  • 1-2 tsp. crushed red pepper
  • 1 cup sliced banana peppers
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes
  • 12 mini potato buns (buttered and hit with some garlic salt and light grilled)
  • 18-20 fresh basil leaves
  • Olive oil
  • 6 slices mozzarella of your liking

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat George Foreman® Smokeless Grill Series to High.
  2. In a large bowl, mix pork, fennel, garlic, salt, black pepper, and crushed red pepper. Season to taste and let sit for at least 30 minutes so flavors can meld.
  3. While sausage mixture is sitting, toss tomatoes in olive oil and place directly on the grill. Grill on all sides until blistered and just starting to burst, about 10 minutes.
  4. Place grilled tomatoes in a bowl and mix with a dash more olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
  5. Roll the sausage mixture into 12 even sized balls, about 3 oz. each. Season with salt and pepper and place on grill. Immediately, use a spatula to smash each ball into about 3/4-inch patty. Cook first side for about 6-7 minutes. Flip and place slice of fresh mozzarella on patty. Cheese will melt as other side cooks.
Sandwich Build:

Place patties on grilled buns and spoon on some of the grilled tomatoes, top with a few sliced banana peppers and 3 small basil leaves.
